I try to blur cultural signifiers to connect to the experience of a wider audience, but I consciously use myself as a character to reference the complexities of identity and intimacy specifically through the eyes of a woman of color. In addition to using myself, referencing domestic spaces, using close friends and family as subjects, incorporating motifs like blanket and coverings, plastic, tattoos, tape and jewelry — dichotomies of hope and hopelessness, empowerment and humiliation, create a kind of vulnerability that I hope my audience can connect with.
